When you’re gluten free its often breaded and battered food that you miss the most. Which is why I love making these homemade gluten free fish goujons so much!

These golden baked cod goujons are coated in crispy gluten free bread crumbs, perfect for a light lunch or dinner.

I love to serve mine up with a good helping of homemade oven chips but they’re just as nice sandwiched between two slices of soft gluten free white bread.

Why make this recipe?

  • Gluten Free: These fish goujons are made using gluten free breadcrumbs and gluten free flour, making them 100% coeliac-friendly and safe on a gluten free diet.
  • Great for Kids: These are a perfect meal for gluten free kids – serve them with chips, peas and a side of tomato ketchup for dipping.
  • Freezer Friendly: Gluten free baked fish goujons are perfect for batch cooking or meal prep as you can freeze them for later.
  • Money Saving: It’s far cheaper and easier to make your own gluten free cod goujons than it is to buy them. And healthier too!

To make my easy gluten free fish goujons recipe you will need:

  • Gluten Free Bread Crumbs: I highly recommend making your own gluten free bread crumbs using my recipe. It’s a lot easier and cheaper than trying to source shop-bought ones, though you can use these too.
  • Cod Fillet: You can use standard cod fillets or cod loin for this recipe. In fact, any white fish works. Try making haddock goujons, plaice goujons or sole goujons if you prefer.
  • Eggs: These create the ‘glue’ to hold the breadcrumb coating on the fish and make them go lovely and cripsy.
  • Plain Gluten Free Flour: I use the FREEE gluten free plain flour but any flour mix is fine. In the US you’ll want an All Purpose Gluten Free Flour.
  • Salt and Pepper: I like to add salt and black pepper to my goujons to give them a bit of flavour. A bit of lemon zest is also a lovely addition.

How to make fish goujons

Making this gluten free fish goujons recipe is really simple – here are some step-by-step photos and a video to prove it!

To make my gluten free fish goujons recipe:

To make air fryer fish goujons

I make these baked fish goujons in the oven but you can make them in the air fryer too.

To air fry your fish goujons, I recommend placing them in the air fryer basket and spraying with a little oil.

Air fry for around 10 minutes at 200C until they are golden and crisp on the outside and cooked through inside.

How to store fish goujons

Once you’ve baked your gluten free fish goujons, I’d recommend eating them straight away. I have some serving suggestions below to help you out.

If you have any leftovers or you’re meal-prepping, you can store the goujons in the fridge. Leave them to cool completely then store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

To freeze the fish goujons, allow them to cool then freeze them in a tub or freezer bag. Defrost in the fridge before reheating.

Make sure you reheat any leftovers thoroughly before eating and never reheat more than once.

Serving Suggestions

Want some ideas to serve this gluten free fish goujons recipe with? Here are my favourites:

  • Fish Finger Sandwich: Take two slices of your favourite gluten free bread – or a freshly baked gluten free roll – and pop some goujons in between. Add some tomato ketchup or tartar sauce for the perfect gluten free fish finger sandwich.
  • Fish and Chips: For a healthier take on fish and chips, serve these gluten free cod goujons with some peas, a wedge of lemon and a helping of homemade oven chips.
  • Fish Tacos: Fancy something more exotic? Try loading some gluten free tortilla wraps with fish goujons, pink pickled onions and my Avocado Pineapple Salsa for fish tacos.
  • Dipped in Sauce: I love having these gluten free fish goujons as a snack with something to dip them in. Trying making homemade gluten free tartar sauce by mixing together 2 tbsp mayonnaise, 3 tbsp finely chopped gherkins and 1 tsp finely chopped capers. Alternatively, they’re great with sweet chilli sauce too.

  • Preheat the oven to 200C / Fan 180C / Gas Mark 6. Grease a non-stick baking tray with a little oil.

  • Pour the gluten free bread crumbs onto a large plate. On a separate plate, mix the GF flour and salt and pepper. Add the beaten egg onto a third plate and set aside.

  • Chop the cod fillet into strips of your chosen size, and then coat each bit in the egg, then flour, then egg again, then finally the bread crumbs. Really press the bread crumbs into the cod, then lay the pieces on the baking tray.

  • Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and the fish is cooked through. Serve hot.
